Three days of top-class Flat racing around Chester's tight turns start today as the track's popular May meeting bursts into life with trials for the Investec Derby and Oaks.

Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore chase a sixth successive win in the MBNA Chester Vase Stakes (3.35), a race they won with subsequent Derby hero Ruler Of The World in 2013.

Moore rides Hunting Horn for O'Brien on this occasion, with Seamie Heffernan and Donnacha O'Brien riding stablemates Flag Of Honour and Family Tree.

The Arkle Finance Cheshire Oaks (2.25) has also been a happy hunting ground for Moore and O'Brien in recent years, and they go for a third win in the last four seasons with Magic Wand this afternoon.

On an action-packed day, Kelso and Newton Abbot stage jumps meetings alongside Chester in the afternoon, while Fontwell, Gowran Park and Wolverhampton entertain through the evening.

What to read

The BHA has indicated it will pay increased attention to crowd control and security in the future licensing of racecourses as the fallout from Saturday's appalling scenes at Goodwood continued, with police calling for witnesses in their efforts to bring violent hooligans to justice.

One-time Kentucky Derby candidate Gronkowski is among 14 horses owned by big-spending Phoenix Thoroughbreds to have been taken away from the Newmarket yard of Jeremy Noseda in a move that left the trainer "shocked and surprised".

The Investec Derby and Qipco Prix du Jockey Club will come under serious consideration for Study Of Man, who overcame a pedestrian early pace at Saint-Cloud on Tuesday to surge into Classic contention.

Chelsea’s top-four quest is on again after a freakish set of Premier League results in recent weeks – and that may well spell danger for Huddersfield, according to Steve Davies, as the teams meet tonight.

Final thought

Traditionally there has been no better trial for the Derby than the 2,000 Guineas and it was no surprise to see Saxon Warrior a short-priced favourite for the Derby after his impressive Guineas win at the weekend.

However, Chester in May has consistently provided valuable pointers for both Epsom Classics and, as Wings Of Eagles showed last year, you don't necessarily have to win this week to graduate to stardom.

He was beaten by stablemate Venice Beach in the Vase 12 months ago, yet caused a 40-1 shock in the Derby the following month.
