Lambourn declared for return on Friday

57 horses have been declared so far for the Chester Cup with only 17 allowed to run around the tight oval track. However, plenty of those have also been declared for the Chester Plate as well. I'll bring you full field for both asap after 10am.

Meanwhile, all nine entered in the Huxley Stakes have been declared, and as we're past the 9.30am deadline for connections to cancel their entry, that field is now set.

  • Ice Max
  • King's Gambit
  • Lambourn

Chester Cup 10am deadline approaching

The deadline for connections to declare their horses for Friday's Chester Cup is fast approaching.

Joseph O'Brien, seeking a first win in the race, has had a near monopoly at the top of the market this week with four of the top five in the betting.

At the moment, he has declared four but only A Piece Of Heaven (Dylan Browne McMonagle), Galileo Dame (Ryan Moore) and Puturhandstogether (Billy Loughnane) are likely to make the 17-runner final field.

That's your 2,000 Guineas-winning jockey booked to ride a Cheltenham Festival and Irish Cesarewitch winner...

Ground and non-runners

The ground at Chester has dried overnight to good (from good, good to soft in places. There has been 10.8mm of rain in the last four days but none forecast today so it could dry out a touch more through the afternoon.

The Chester Vase has had a little of its shine taken away after the JOhn and Thady Gosden-trained Water To Wine, rated the biggest danger to Benvenuto Cellini, was taken out yesterday due to a temperature.

Non-runners

1.30 7 Fern Clyde
3.05 6 Royal Standard, 7 Water To Wine
3.40 10 Saffron Dandy, 2 Silent Strike
4.10 1 Alfaraz

Good morning!

Hello and welcome to day one of the Chester May meeting.

If anybody was struggling to return to Flat mode following the end of the jumps season, surely Bow Echo's blockbuster performance in the 2,000 Guineas has pulled you right back in.

Now, we move to the north west and what a fantastic afternoon of racing we have in store as we shift focus towards the Derby and Oaks in exactly 31 days time.

The Chester Vase (3.05) and Cheshire Oaks (2.35) are always two of the best trials in the calendar and this year they are bigger and better than ever with the Derby favourite, Benvenuto Cellini, and the top two in the Oaks market, I'm The One and Amelia Earhart, putting their credentials to the test.

I can attest that Chester is an absolutely cracking day out but for all of us who can't be there today, I'll be here covering every moment.
