The 100-1 Gold Cup winner: how a farmer with three horses masterminded a miracle

They wanted to bury him on the front lawn.

They would have done exactly that but for a deluge of rain that so often falls in Wales and on this occasion left the turf and soil completely sodden. Instead, in a move that brought the deceased full circle, they took him a few yards away and laid down Norton's Coin in an unmarked corner of the very field in which he was conceived.

Once upon a time the young Griffiths children would regularly place flowers at the spot, honouring the animal they loved so dearly. That, however, was many years ago. Now, without guidance from the family, you would never find the chestnut with the white blaze. Thirty years ago, not many punters found him, either.
