Peter Thomas gauges Welsh opinion on the festival at a preview night in Newport

You know there’s going to be no loss of life in Newport tonight when the resident bookmaker chalks up 4-6 no winner for a Welsh trainer at the festival and there’s not a peep out of the crowd.
A bit bloody rude, I’d have said, but not a leek is hurled in anger and even Vale of Glamorgan trainer Christian Williams fails to turn puce behind his luxuriant beard.
If this had been Ireland, as I recall, there would have been hurling aplenty, and not the type the Irish play as a bizarre national sport. Lower expectations in Wales, I suppose, although Rebecca Curtis would probably have something to say about it.
