Cash back: stable staff dreaming of €50,000 payday with Latest Exhibition
The decibel levels of the famous Cheltenham Festival roar could be given a run for its money in County Wexford if leading Albert Bartlett contender Latest Exhibition strikes gold on the final day of the meeting.
Paul Nolan's small team of stable staff at Toberona Stables, near Enniscorthy, will be set for a €50,000 bonus if their Dublin Racing Festival scorer doubles up next month, with the seven-year-old rated a general 6-1 chance to land the lucrative incentive, supported by Nathaniel Lacy & Partners Solicitors.
The bonus was last collected in 2017 when Let's Dance completed the double in the Mares' Novices' Hurdle.
"There'll be a few extra roars in the yard when they're watching to push him on, the bonus could make a huge difference," said Nolan.
"We have four or five permanent staff and five who come in during the mornings – it's very different to having a huge number of people involved. We know it's an outside chance it would happen but we can all still dream."
Nolan, who enjoyed Cheltenham success with Dabiroun in the 2005 Fred Winter and landed the first running of the Jewson Novices' Chase with Noble Prince in 2011, believes the step up to three miles should see his top-notch novice excel.
"I think the longer trip in the Albert Bartlett will be an asset to him," he explained.
"Although he has age on his side, he doesn't have many miles on the clock. He's a horse who isn't hugely travelled but he seems a relaxed type so we hope it won't be an issue."
Nolan added: "He's come out of Leopardstown well and thank God we've had no setbacks as of yet. We're obviously hoping as many as possible run in the Ballymore."
Nolan holds two Cheltenham handicap chase entries in the shape of Fitzhenry and Discorama, though the Wexford native feels last year's National Hunt Chase runner-up will struggle to turn the tables on winner Le Breuil should they clash again in the Ultima.
"Discorama's Irish mark wasn't changed on Wednesday but I don't see how we'll turn around last year's form," he said.
"We've had two runs over fences this season, in the most recent one he finished down the field in the Troytown and we've been dropped 1lb.
"In the meantime, Le Breuil has been dropped 5lb for two runs over fences. We were beaten in a dour battle at Cheltenham last year when there were no excuses."
He added: "It's still all systems go for the Ultima, though. We hope he can come back to a bit of better form and he's had a wind op.
"We won't know if it's worked until we try it but we'll give him a pop over fences and hope everything goes to plan.
"He struggled in deep ground at Limerick over Christmas and forcing him on doesn't suit.
"Settling out the back in his own rhythm at Cheltenham suits him well, so we'll ride him that way again."
He added of Fitzhenry, second in this season's Troytown and Paddy Power Chase: "He's in good form and entered in three handicap chases at Cheltenham, we'll decide where he goes when speaking to Frank [Berry]."
