Christophe Soumillon's second Champion Stakes victory was worth missing his flight home for – in stark contrast to his first, when he left Ascot "embarrassed for British racing" after falling foul of controversial whip rules that cost him his £50,000 share of prize-money and a five-day ban.

Soumillon went on television to eloquently express his outrage over the punishment, while a rather flummoxed Paul Roy, BHA chairman at the time, admitted the timing of the introduction of the rules could have waited until after the showcase raceday. As it was, they should probably never have been introduced at all.
