Kentucky Kid Cauthen defends US whip rules in wake of Soumillon controversy

Legendary US Triple Crown and former three-time British champion jockey Steve Cauthen has made a staunch defence of the US whip rules after Christophe Soumillon’s ride on Breeders' Cup Classic third Thunder Snow attracted strong criticism.

British-born US-based trainer Graham Motion, along with British trainers Brendan Powell and Stuart Williams, were among a host of people on social media to condemn Soumillon’s use of the whip in the $6million race on Saturday won by Accelerate.

"Absolutely brutal by Soumillon on Thunder Snow!!" Powell Tweeted. "18 times from turning in. Out of rhythm and unbalanced!! I do wish they had same whip rules as most European countries."
