Japan fired everything at the Hong Kong International meeting and it paid off. They had more entries and more runners than ever and they went home happy, winning two of the four feature races.

European trainers, meanwhile, sent out one of their weakest raiding parties. Highland Reel was the only realistic chance of a winner and his defeat in the Vase consigned Europe to their worst result at the valuable Sha Tin fixture with no wins and just two places.
