It’s going to be the deal no-one wants. The compromise that satisfies no-one and annoys nearly everyone. At the glamorous Longines awards for the World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, we’ll get a split decision between Winx and Cracksman.

It’ll certainly annoy the folks at Punters in Australia. "Our friends at Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings have done it again, denying Winx her place as outright best horse in the world." No deal for them. But never mind, the people have spoken. Winx is champion – or at least she’s won the Secretariat Vox Populi award, presented by secretariat.com.

An enjoyable, old-style site is secretariat.com, from a zone where parallax scrolling might as well be a new Olympic discipline. Aside from the award, it’s entirely devoted to Secretariat. Fair enough. There’s an audience for that. Just look at the guestbook, bristling with acolytes arguing about who is the biggest Secretariat fan (they are). Makes it even more interesting that a non-US horse took the gong for the first time.
