It is easy to describe Dan Skelton's stunning rise through the training ranks as remarkable but it is not completely surprising, nor is the glory his alone. For Skelton, helped hugely by his brother-jockey Harry, a fantastic team and enviable facilities, has been bred and nurtured for the job he now carries out with such stunning results.
First, there's his father. From the late 1970s through to 2017 Nick Skelton was one of the world's top showjumpers. His career was the stuff of legend, not least because he returned to the sport after breaking his neck in 2000 before in 2012, at the age of 54, forming part of Britain's gold medal-winning team at the London Olympics. Four years later he claimed the individual title in Rio, becoming Britain's oldest Olympic gold medallist in 108 years.
