True legends lost with passing of Molony and Carberry

Legend is a much overused word but Irish racing lost two men in the past week who fully justified the description. Both of them were champion jockeys and both were exceptional talents.

Martin Molony's career was cut short by injuries suffered in a fall in 1952 and, although I never saw him ride, many respected judges, most of them sadly no longer with us, held him in the highest regard as arguably the best all-rounder of them all.

His record over jumps and on the Flat was outstanding and his regular trips across the Irish Sea in an era when that journey was made by ship rather than by plane made him a star here and in Britain.
