Triumph and tragedy in storied history of Flat and jumps titles
1 Records compiled by the late Tony and Annie Sweeney identify William Westlake as Ireland's first official champion jockey with 12 wins in 1812. In a review of Westlake's career published in The Sporting Magazine in 1834, he is referred to as "the nicest of men".
2 Dorset-born Charlie Maidment, who shared the British title with William Gray in 1870 and with George Fordham in 1871, was twice champion in Ireland. He rode Selim to win the inaugural Irish Derby, a 1m6f event at the Curragh, for Staffordshire trainer Tom Cliff in 1866 and was successful for the same trainer again on Golden Plover the following year. He rode Hannah to win the fillies' Triple Crown in Britain in 1871 and won the Derby twice.
3 When Harry Beasley won the overall championship in 1895, he achieved the feat with 33 wins from 59 rides, a remarkable strike-rate. Beasley, aboard Come Away to win the 1891 Grand National, continued to ride major winners at Punchestown well into his sixties. He retired from race-riding in the spring of 1935, dissatisfied with his handling of his mount in the Corinthian Maiden Plate at Baldoyle. He was then 85 years old.
