The first European settlers discovered that Australia favours survival of the fittest. European bookmakers are similarly finding the environment down under tough to overcome.

The market is a lucrative one. Australians famously love a bet and, depending on which figures you use, lose more per head than any other nation on Earth.

And the gambling industry in Australia has been transformed in recent years. The likes of bet365, William Hill, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes have all started online operations there aiming to join the feast.
