You can’t miss it, there are posters everywhere. Stockholm is ready. For Miss Universe. Not exactly the premier attraction you’d expect in a country renowned for its equality, but then again perhaps Mr Universe was last weekend, or next.

Fortunately this weekend also boasts an event far more befitting a nation long symbolised by its famous wooden Dala horses, if not its horseracing.

A little north of the capital, 40 minutes and a £4 train journey away (not everything in Sweden is as expensive as you’ve heard) Bro Park is hosting the Festival of Swedish Racing. Svensk Galopp has literally rolled out the red carpet, a ribbon of which welcomes locals and overseas visitors alike to its newest course (for just £8.50), the latest chapter in a fragmented sporting history that began in 1814.
