David Jennings gets the inside track on what is needed for the Kempton showpiece
Wanted: outstanding chaser who stays three miles but has sufficient speed to cope with strongly run affair. Foot-perfect jumping is paramount. Preferred applicant should be aged between six and nine and have at least eight outings over fences under his belt. Previous Grade 1 chase winners need only apply and, preferably, have experience of running in the race before.
Those who wish to apply should show up at Kempton on Wednesday week and form an orderly queue behind the tape at 3.05pm. Time-wasters will be treated with contempt. This is a job for a special steeplechaser. The winning candidate will have his name engraved alongside greats such as Arkle, Desert Orchid and Kauto Star and will likely be the leading contender to secure the most coveted position in jump racing – that of the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.
