Talented Flemenstar will always be associated with Peter Casey

Flemenstar, whose retirement was announced during the week, gave connections some great days, winning four Grade 1 chases and doing for his original trainer Peter Casey what in many ways Danoli had done for Tom Foley some years ago. The two horses catapulted both trainers into the big race limelight, taking on the bigger yards and gathering many fans with their exploits.

Retired at the age of 12, Flemenstar won a Fortria Chase for Tony Martin and a Grade 1 Paddy Power Chase at Leopardstown two years ago for his owner Stephen Curran's son, Anthony, after winning eight races for Casey.

A horse who had his problems over the years, he never showed his best on his few trips to Britain – and it could be said that he never quite fulfilled his potential.
