The moment of truth was at hand.

Oisin Murphy was marooned behind Verbal Dexterity for much of a race in which three Ballydoyle runners – Deauville, Saxon Warrior and Rhododendron – formed a trident at the front of the field. His options were expiring fast as he reached the four-furlong pole, where he was poorly placed towards the rear of a slowly run race.

The sprint would detonate as soon as the field levelled for home. Sirens in his head beseeched him to cut back inside but he resisted the call to ride for luck around the final bend. Nor was he tempted to round the field on the wide outside, adding yardage to his journey.
