The Classic-winning Newmarket trainer marks your card ahead of a season in which he hopes to again dine at the top table

Roger Varian is a trainer who judges his success on quality, so the fact his powerful Newmarket stable drew a blank at Group 1 level last season is something he is keen to put right this term.
However, it should not be forgotten that Varian came within a neck of winning his third St Leger in September with Rahiebb, who returns as a four-year-old and as a potential Gold Cup candidate.
Varian also beat the previous year in terms of winners last season, so it was hardly a disaster, but he is aiming for more this time around.
