A fresh season brings a fresh start for Roger Varian, who has swapped one historic Newmarket yard for another with the acquisition of Carlburg Stable, the substantial former base of pioneer Clive Brittain.

Also new among a considerable equine team are 85 juveniles, many owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, who enjoyed a stellar season with Postponed last term and has invested heavily to provide his trainer with potential stars of the future.

It’s not all about new beginnings, however, as Varian brings a well-stocked team of older horses with him from Kremlin House, including a lightly-raced group of three-year-olds harbouring Classic potential.
