John O'Hara talks to the up-and-coming trainer about his promising string

Things could hardly be going better for Sam Thomas at his state-of-the-art stables, The Hollies, just down the road from Cardiff. The man who rode Denman to victory in the Gold Cup has proved he is equally adept as a trainer.

“I know I’m very lucky to be training here,” says Thomas.
“When Christian [Williams] left I took the job on for Mr [Dai] Walters and things have been going great. Last season we had 26 winners from only 92 runners.

“This season we have an even more promising string with some smart established types as well as a host of exciting youngsters.”
