Charlie Appleby is embarking on his fifth full season with a licence and his modus operandi has become clear. He brings his horses along steadily, with one eye always on the future, in the process striving to develop older horses who can compete internationally.

That policy is bearing fruit. Moulton Paddocks is well stocked with seasoned campaigners in the mould of Folkswood, Frontiersman, Hawkbill, Jungle Cat and Rare Rhythm.

Most of them will be in action on Dubai World Cup night on Saturday, when the stable bids to embellish a Dubai Carnival campaign during which it plundered seven Group races this year.
