Speciosa the leading lady but stardom followed for supporting cast
Lewis Porteous picks out four tales from a memorable Classic encounter
The 2006 1,000 Guineas provided one of the ultimate rags-to-riches stories. Whereas so often the Classics are dominated by the superpowers of Flat racing who rule the upper echelons of the sport, tradition was broken as Speciosa upset the big guns for trainer Pam Sly, better known for her runners over jumps, and hardworking jockey Micky Fenton.
The victory was no fluke either, with previous and subsequent Group 1 winners lining up for their shot at Classic stardom.
Big owner-breeders Cheveley Park were doubly represented with Confidential Lady and Fillies’ Mile winner Nannina. Godolphin had Group 1-winning two-year-old Silca’s Sister and Ballydoyle saddled favourite Rumplestiltskin.
