Samcro the warrior? Keith Melrose walks through the Marsh Novices' Chase in the latest of our Cheltenham series.


It is an oft-cited trend that Arkle winners tend to have high-class form over hurdles behind them. That was not especially the case in this year's running of the Arkle, but it certainly applied to the Marsh.

Faugheen needs no introduction, nor Samcro. Melon is a dual Champion Hurdle runner-up, while Bapaume broke the 160 barrier over hurdles. Reserve Tank, Itchy Feet and Midnight Shadow were also bordering on Grade 1 class in that sphere.
