'If I had the horse I'd do it again - but Kauto was a one-off'
Paul Nicholls recalls the season when his greatest chaser ripped up the rule book
You've already read about some extraordinary campaigning this week that seems like it belongs in an entirely different era, yet the current British champion trainer achieved arguably his most memorable feat with a campaign mapped out along similar lines.
It was a run of victories that never threatened to match the double-digit exploits of the likes of Monksfield and Sea Pigeon for length, but for sheer sustained quality at an exalted level (six wins from six runs, including four Grade 1s, at a dizzying range of distances, and even one handicap for good measure), Kauto Star's 2006-07 season takes some beating.
Don't run away with the idea, though, that this was a season of plain sailing for the horse who came to be regarded as the greatest chaser of the century (so far). In terms of raw ability, he was rarely threatened, but there was drama along the way as he developed his own sometimes alarming method of negotiating obstacles at crucial points in his races.
