If there is one thing ante-post punters might get wrong when considering having a bet well in advance of the day, it is concentrating too much on a specific horse rather than pinpointing a race that has a good betting shape to it. I’ve always felt that there is no point betting on a race when the competition is likely to be steep or if you can’t be sure whether the horse you intend to back is likely to line up, but there are going to be some ante-post races that don’t have any outstanding contenders. They are the ones to concentrate on.
When looking at the upcoming season, the likes of Bob Olinger, Appreciate It, My Drogo and any of the potentially star novice hurdlers have so many options come Cheltenham that most of the novice races are dangerous to get involved in at this early stage.
Willie Mullins and Henry de Bromhead tend not to decide where their best horses are going to run until late on and consequently it makes little sense backing any of their horses ante-post now unless their target is guaranteed like Minella Indo in the Gold Cup, Honeysuckle in the Champion Hurdle or Chacun Pour Soi in the Champion Chase.
