It’s been mixed signals for Britain’s two big young hopes over fences this season.
A day after Gold Cup possible Haiti Couleurs showed his wellbeing with a reappearance win over hurdles at Newbury, Kalif Du Berlais disappointed in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter and was shoved out to 33-1 for the Champion Chase.
His below-par effort naturally attracted plenty of mirth on social media, but it’s worth remembering that so did Caldwell Potter's odds-on Windsor defeat last season, and Paul Nicholls soon turned him around. Furthermore, Kalif Du Berlais is still only five.
