Sir Michael Stoute joins royalty at the Jockey Club Rooms as his portrait is unveiled

Two significant events involving artwork have been held in Newmarket in the run-up to Christmas, the most notable of which was the unveiling of a portrait of Sir Michael Stoute at the Jockey Club Rooms.

The gathering, just off Newmarket High Street, was well attended by many of Stoute's colleagues, owners and jockeys. The ten-time champion trainer, who retired a year ago after a glittering career that spanned 52 years and featured six Derby triumphs, was also joined by artist Jamie Coreth.

From the training ranks were William Haggas, Ed Dunlop and Stoute’s former neighbour Luca Cumani, who enjoyed a first look at the portrait, which will hang not far from that of Stoute's great patron Queen Elizabeth II and his great training rival Sir Henry Cecil.
