Point-to-pointing has developed into a multi-million euro industry in rural Ireland with a significant commercial element to it, evidenced by vast sums of money spent on young horses who have shown promise, but the sport has not lost all its amateur roots.

On Sunday’s Borris House card, Peaky Boy and Demandrivingdouvan commanded much of the spotlight after impressive debuts in the four- and five-year-old maidens, but they shared the stage at the County Carlow venue with the victory of Mangan Sue.

Not only did the five-year-old provide 18-year-old Bertie Finn with his first success in the saddle, one of four riders to complete that achievement over the weekend, but she was also a first winner in the sphere since 2020 for trainer Patrick Doyle.
