Former point-to-point riders presented with golden opportunity on the track
Hot on the heels of Michael O’Sullivan three weeks earlier, Jordan Gainford became the latest jockey with a recent background in the point-to-point sphere to enjoy a breakthrough Grade 1 success when partnering Gordon Elliott’s Gerri Colombe to victory in the Faugheen Novice Chase at Limerick on St Stephen’s Day.
It was fitting that the Wexford jockey’s initial Grade 1 winning mount was, like himself, a graduate of Colin Bowe’s Milestone Stables pointing academy, with the multiple champion handler having played a significant part in the 21-year-old’s grounding in the sport.
After 11 point-to-point wins, Gainford switched to the professional ranks in February 2021 as point-to-pointing was shut down for a second successive year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. His impact on the track was immediate.
