Champion point-to-point rider O'Connor nominated for Ride of the Year

The 11-time champion point-to-point rider Derek O’Connor is one of six riders to feature among the nominees for the Ride of the Year category at the forthcoming Horse Racing Ireland Awards.

O’Connor received his nomination for delivering a perfectly timed ride on Irish point-to-point graduate Edwulf to win the Grade 1 Unibet Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in February.

The success was all the more noteworthy given where the pair found themselves just 11 months earlier, when the then eight-year-old collapsed in the home straight during the National Hunt Chase at the
Cheltenham Festival, leading to concerns over whether he would ever make it back to the track.
