In a huge double blow to the sport the reigning champions on the Flat and over hurdles, Roaring Lion and Espoir D'Allen, died on the same day, August 23.

Roaring Lion, the world champion three-year-old of 2018, had a fatal bout of colic after one season at stud, and Espoir D'Allen, the record-breaking Champion Hurdle winner, had to be put down after a freak accident.

Roaring Lion came third in Masar's Derby and then achieved a unique four-timer in the Eclipse, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
