Time will tell how good or otherwise this opening juvenile contest at Killarney's August festival was, but the winner Kew Gardens scored in the manner of a nice horse and looks a smart middle-distance prospect, and the runner-up also shaped well on his debut and looks certain to improve.

One of the picks of the paddock, Tonkin was keen during the race and when the winner quickened up he couldn't match the pace of that colt. However, he stuck to his task well and shaped as if the experience would bring him on a good deal.

Mile maidens are hard to win at this time of the year and he may well be seen to better effect in a nursery before the season's end, but he certainly has the ability to win races.
