Even with only 13 runners, there was still a charge at the first fence. Jockeys are keen to ensure a good sight and not be behind another horse – you don't want to risk being brought down. It's one of the few times you see riders using the full width of an obstacle.

The field was led by Sir Jack Yeats, who has good course form. James Best is an enthusiastic chase jockey and he'd have been buzzing about the ride.

He did 15-16sec furlongs, which had the field settled and jumping well and was a factor in the low casualty rate.
