You’re Rachael Blackmore. You were relieved to get just one pro winner, you had to go up and down stairs on your hands and bum. But you did it all
The racing writer of the year pays tribute to his great friend

You’re Rachael Blackmore. It’s Thurles on February 10, 2011 and you’re riding Stowaway Pearl in a ladies’ handicap hurdle. He’s rated 81 and you’ve never ridden a winner. Until today. You’re 21. You’re studying equine science in Limerick. Today, Miss R Blackmore (7) gets her first winner.
You’re Rachael Blackmore. It’s Clonmel on September 3, 2015. You dropped the Miss on March 16 but you’ve still got the 7lb. The picture you have hung on the stairs is you on Klassy because he won you two point-to-points last year. You’re 25. You’ve had nearly 60 rides but no winner as a pro. Most Honourable had been Andrew McNamara’s final winner as a professional jockey. Now he’s your first winner as a professional jockey. You’re relieved. Maybe this was the right decision.
You’re Rachael Blackmore. It’s Punchestown on April 29, 2017. You’re down to 3lb now and riding Pique Sous for Willie Mullins in the final big handicap of the season, but he falls and you’re concussed. Just before the race you’d collected the champion conditional trophy from Ruby Walsh. You’ll hang that picture up too. You’ve ridden 32 winners for the season. You get out of hospital in time to make it to the Final Fence party and dance the night away.
