Matt Cumani: son of Newmarket legend thriving in Australia
Jack Haynes catches up with the burgeoning Ballarat trainer

Arranging an interview on a raceday is a risky strategy. That risk turns to dread when the first of the interviewee’s two runners finishes eighth.
There is more disappointment than delight for any trainer though and Matt Cumani is suitably content when grabbing a stool to discuss all things Australia out the back of the main stand at Caulfield between races on Blue Sapphire Stakes day.
Cumani is into his fourth year of training after stints with his father, recently retired Newmarket trainer Luca, Ed Dunlop, Todd Pletcher and Paddy Gallagher, and last season brought a record prize-money total of A$2.1m (£1.1m/€1.29m) and a career-high tally of 54 winners.
