1 One of jump racing’s legendary figures, Fred Winter holds the record for the most wins in the top three jump races – Champion Hurdle, Gold Cup, Grand National – with 14, comprising seven as a jockey and seven as a trainer. He is the only person to have won all three both as jockey and trainer.

2 Winter's father, also called Fred, was a Flat jockey who won the Oaks as a 16-year-old apprentice on Cherimoya in 1911. He set up as a trainer on Epsom Downs in 1929; aged four and a half, Fred jnr would accompany his father's string aboard his pony Snowball. He had his first ride aged 13 on the Flat at Newbury.

3 Winter won four jump jockeys' championships and might have made it five had he not missed the last day of the season in June 1960 in order to go on holiday with his family. He took the night train from Paddington to Cornwall with his wife Diana and his daughters; Stan Mellor rode a double at Uttoxeter and beat him 68-67.
