The rise, the fall and, if Josephine Gordon’s determination and ability win through, the rise again.

Rollercoaster rides are a common sight in jockeys’ careers, sometimes caused by the rider, sometimes by trainers or owners, often an accident of timing, changing fashions or sheer luck.

Few have experienced the extreme ride enjoyed and endured by the 26-year-old Gordon in such a short span of time. Champion apprentice in 2016, only the second woman jockey, following Hayley Turner, to ride more than 100 winners in a season in 2017 yet now, two years later, battling to climb back up the greasy pole on a much thinner diet of often unpromising rides.
