Japan could be the one to take Derby form to another level

With only three-quarters of a length covering the first five across the line in the Investec Derby, many have questioned whether it was a good renewal of the Epsom Classic. While such a reaction is understandable, it smacks of a rush to judgement.

The winner, Anthony Van Dyck, got the run of the race over the final furlong or so, securing a clear passage on the inside. Runner-up Madhmoon proved conclusively that he got the trip and was probably a shade unlucky.

However, the horse to take out of the race was third-placed Japan, who finished off best of all.
