It has been a remarkable April for Warwickshire-based rider James King. From February 22 last year to the start of this month he did not ride a point-to-point winner, and while there was a close season and Covid-related stoppages, he rode in 54 races without success.

Yet in the past four weeks he has won 14 point-to-points and leapt to the top of the men’s championship, in addition to landing Aintree’s Foxhunters’ Chase on 66-1 shot Cousin Pascal.

He has also trained his first winner (and added two more), and last Friday at Chepstow he won on 33-1 outsider Nikki Steel, a first permit success for Pontypool’s Daniel Bourne.
