'ITV shouldn't be too different - most viewers want coverage they recognise'
Murray Meikle, 48, gives his thoughts on racing's TV coverage
As a racing enthusiast, I’m generally content with the package we have – fundamentally I want to know how the betting market is shaping up, hear some discussion from experts, and then watch a race while listening to an informed commentary.
I was a fan of racing on the BBC, mainly because they had coverage of the larger meetings that for me, as a National Hunt racing fan first and foremost, were Cheltenham and Aintree. Growing up you would relive those races with a Sir Peter O’Sullevan soundtrack playing in your head.
I like the fact Channel 4 have moved away from the laddish ‘banter’ and in-house jokes, but the coverage feels a bit clinical at times. The amount of information provided has improved but it often comes across as gimmicky and some of the presenters look uncomfortable with the gadgets.
