'It was the high point of my career, the crowning moment'
Steve Dennis speaks to some top racing figures who were at Longchamp 30 years ago to witness one of the greatest races ever
Most races are quickly forgotten. Some races stay in the memory for a short time. A few races, a very few, because of their circumstances, or the way they were run, or the horses who won them, live forever in the collective memory. Guy Harwood, trainer of Dancing Brave
I went over on the morning of the race with Grant [Pritchard-Gordon, Khalid Abdullah's racing manager] and we had lunch just outside the track. Half an hour before the race I saddled the horse up and away we went.
I was very confident. I knew he'd be able to do his best because he was at his best. I couldn't see him being beaten. We were lucky to get fast ground for him – I'm not saying he wouldn't have won on soft ground, because it was soft when he won the Craven Stakes, but I knew he was a good-ground horse and that gave us one less thing to worry about.
