Lewis Porteous talks to Mickey Bowen, whose love of summer jumps has seen him make a rapid start to his training career

It might be a new era for the Bowen family but there is nothing new about the way their yard in deepest Pembrokeshire has been firing on all cylinders through the summer.

It is 30 years since Peter Bowen took out a professional training licence, hoping to build on his success in point-to-points. From the start he was a trainer to follow through the summer months, with a knack for finding chasers quick enough to win when the ground dried up.

A new season in May heralded a changing of the guard, with Bowen snr handing over the reins to his eldest son Mickey, himself a former point-to-point trainer who has made the transition to sole licence holder after a year making sharing control with his dad look easy.
