'People with brain injuries don't get to exercise their minds as much - racing gives me a purpose'

Trainer Harriet Bethell tells Andrew Dietz about how her spirits have been lifted by the fine form of her horses

It's the time of year when many a trainer will achieve personal-best seasons, but quite how Harriet Bethell has managed it beggars belief.

Six years ago, Bethell's world was turned upside down after a life-threatening fall on the gallops left her with multiple bleeds on the brain and required part of her skull to be removed, putting her into a coma for six weeks and in hospital for nine months. 

Her recovery was so remarkable that just two years later she conjured the strength and will to complete an inspirational course walk of Pontefract to raise funds for the Injured Jockeys Fund.
