Roman philosopher Seneca once said "if one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favourable".
Sam Thomas knows the validity of that ancient wisdom only too well after he resembled a rudderless vessel bobbing up and down on the ocean towards the end of his life as a jockey, a period during which he sailed the high seas before being knocked off course and sinking to the depths almost without a trace.
