GambleAware chief executive Marc Etches has this week written to gambling operators to thank them for a significant increase in their voluntary donations to the charity.

Ministers have warned they will consider a mandatory levy on gambling operators if they do not step up funding for research, education and treatment, with contributions to GambleAware falling short of the £10 million a year needed to deliver the National Responsible Gambling Strategy.

In turn, representatives of the bookmaking industry have voiced their support for such a levy.
