The closure of Kempton is not a done deal, but should the Jockey’s Club controversial deal with Redrow have ever been done?

The deal was highly contentious when the possibility of a sale was first announced at the start of 2017. It remains no less controversial now – and in recent months a belief that Kempton's long-term future as a racecourse had finally been secured has been torn to shreds. 

Over the coming years, the home of the King George VI Chase could be bulldozed and turned into a repository for 3,000 new homes as a result of a deal that has left Jockey Club chief executive Jim Mullen openly stating there is nothing he can do to prevent the closest racecourse to central London passing into the hands of what is now Barratt Redrow.
