'I'd love to train a really great racehorse, a Sea The Stars or a Kauto Star'
The former top amateur turned trainer, 68, takes the weekly grilling
What advice would you give your ten-year-old self?
Enjoy yourself.
What’s the best bet you've ever had?
Commanche Court to win the Triumph Hurdle in 1997, which won me a life-changing amount of money at the time. I rang Mike Dillon after Alan Fleming had ridden him in a schooling race at Punchestown in December before the horse had run for me and asked him what price he'd give me about having a winner at Cheltenham. He said, 'What race?' So when I told him the Triumph, he said, 'Any price you like'. That's what I did and didn't think about it until I was lying in bed that night in Winchcombe and it dawned on me I had all that money [a five-figure sum] to come. Along with the excitement of the race, it was a life-changing thing as I had the horse to sell, but didn't because of the bet. He also went on to be a good horse for us, winning the Irish National.
Would you rather win the Cheltenham Gold Cup or be champion trainer?
The Gold Cup. It's more realistic for me and it'd mean you had a good horse. I've never had any aspirations of being champion trainer, but I'd love to win the Gold Cup.
