When Salvatore beat Cheltenham Festival winner Porlock Bay at Bangor last month, the winning rider would have been unfamiliar to many.

Darren Andrews, 28, not to be confused with his better-known west country namesake Darren Edwards – 288 pointing wins and a Cheltenham Festival success on the Martin Pipe-trained Maximise – is emerging as a late bloomer whose graft is being rewarded.

He won last season's Heart of All England at Hexham on Dr Kananga (runs on Friday at Exeter), while the ride on the Phil Rowley-trained Salvatore was a sign of respect from a leading yard.
