The jumps season is gathering pace with Cheltenham opening its doors last weekend and, in terms of quality, arguably the standout race run at Prestbury Park was the 2m novice chase won by the Dan Skelton-trained North Hill Harvey, which took place last Friday.

Whether this Class 2 contest will have any bearing on this season’s top novice chases remains to be seen, but the first four home are all smart chasing prospects, and North Hill Harvey making a successful chase debut on his first start since the Grand National meeting last season was a welcome result for punters who like to back horses who go well when fresh.

North Hill Harvey showed how he can be at his peak after a break when making a winning start last season, again at Cheltenham, landing the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle. And those who monitor the performance of his stable closely will tell you Skelton’s horses rarely lack fitness when returning from absences.
