After Sunday’s Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe came the Prix de l’Opera, but there was no need for the fat lady even to clear her throat – she was redundant. The lady with the big ears had already sung and hit all the high notes with consummate ease.

Being a jumps man to the inner core, it is rare for a Flat race to get the emotions fizzing – winter for the heart, summer for the head – but this triumph leapt across that divide, and joyously so.
